How the cash flow forecast works

A cash flow forecast shows when money actually arrives and leaves your bank account. Profit on paper does not pay bills, so a business can be profitable and still run out of cash. This planner updates as you type and runs fully in your browser, so it also works offline in the app.

Lines you can add

  • Every month: rent, salaries, subscriptions, regular sales.
  • Every quarter: tax payments, quarterly contracts.
  • Once a year: insurance, licences, annual fees.
  • One-off: an equipment purchase, a loan received, a large order.

Each line has a start month, an optional end month and an optional growth rate per month, for example 2% for growing sales or rising costs.

Formulas

Amount in a month = Amount x (1 + Growth) ^ months since the line started. Closing balance = Opening balance + Cash in – Cash out, and each closing balance becomes the next month’s opening balance. The tool marks the lowest balance, the first month cash goes negative and any month below your safety buffer.

Saved scenarios

Save a base case, a best case and a worst case and reload them any time. Scenarios are stored on this device and sync to your free account when you sign in.

Limitations

A forecast is only as good as its assumptions. It does not model late customer payments, credit terms, VAT timing or currency swings unless you enter them as lines. Review it monthly against your real bank balance. This is a planning tool, not financial advice.

FAQ

Cash Flow Forecast FAQs

What is a cash flow forecast?

A cash flow forecast is a month by month estimate of the cash coming into and going out of your business. It starts with your current bank balance, adds expected receipts, subtracts expected payments and shows the closing balance for each month, so you can see a cash shortage coming and act early.

How do I make a 12-month cash flow forecast?

Start with today’s cash balance. List every source of cash in, such as sales and loans, and every payment, such as rent, wages, suppliers and tax. Record when each one is actually paid, not when it is invoiced. This tool then works out the balance for each month automatically.

What should I do if my forecast shows negative cash?

Act before that month arrives. You can delay a large purchase, ask customers to pay sooner or pay deposits, negotiate longer terms with suppliers, cut or pause some costs, or arrange an overdraft or credit line. Model each option as a saved scenario to see which closes the gap.

Is my cash flow data private?

Yes. The forecast runs in your browser and is saved on your device. Nothing is sent to our server unless you sign in to a free account, in which case your saved forecasts sync so you can open them on your phone and computer. You can also export a CSV or PDF copy.
