This is a colour key tool, not a cloud AI service. It reads your image in the browser and finds the background colour automatically from the pixels along the edges. You can override that by clicking any part of the background in the preview.
Two removal modes
- Background touching the edges: a flood fill starts at the image border and removes only connected pixels within your tolerance. Similar colours inside the subject are kept. Click an enclosed gap, such as the space inside a handle, to remove it too.
- This colour everywhere: removes every pixel close to the picked colour, useful for logos and holes in shapes.
Tolerance and edges
Colour distance is measured in RGB space. Tolerance sets how far a pixel can be from the key colour and still be removed. Pixels just outside that range become partly transparent, and the edge softness slider blurs the mask slightly so outlines look natural. The erase and restore brushes let you paint transparency on or off by hand, with undo.
Limitations
It works best on plain, evenly lit or studio backgrounds with good contrast against the subject. Hair, fur, glass, shadows and busy scenes need professional editing. Very large photos are resized to 2000 pixels on the long side for smooth editing.

Is this background remover really free?
Yes. There are no credits, watermarks or sign-ups. It runs entirely in your browser using your device, so we have no processing costs to pass on. You can remove backgrounds from as many images as you like and download full transparent PNG files.
Why does my photo not cut out cleanly?
Colour key removal needs a background that is clearly different from the subject. If parts of the subject match the background, they may disappear; lower the tolerance or use the restore brush. Busy scenes, hair and shadows need professional tools or a photo retaken on a plain backdrop.
Which file format keeps the transparency?
PNG. The tool always downloads a PNG with a transparent background. JPG cannot store transparency, so if you convert it later the background will turn white or black. Upload the PNG to our Product Photo Studio to place it on a clean background.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Your images never leave your device. The tool reads the file locally, edits it in the browser and creates the download on your computer or phone. Nothing is sent to us or to any third party, so it is safe for private or unreleased photos.
