Profit Margin Calculator: Enter your cost and selling price to see gross margin, markup and profit per unit. Work backwards to the right price for a target margin, or paste a full product list and export it. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser. How to use it: 1) choose what to work out: margin from cost and price, a price from a target margin or markup, or the highest cost you can pay; 2) enter the numbers and pick your currency, then press Calculate; 3) read the margin, markup and profit, compare them in the margin vs markup table, and download a CSV or PDF. The calculator uses the standard gross margin and markup formulas. Everything runs in your browser, so it works offline in the Hayyat Networks app and your numbers never leave your device.
How the profit margin calculator works
The calculator uses the standard gross margin and markup formulas. Everything runs in your browser, so it works offline in the Hayyat Networks app and your numbers never leave your device. It remembers your last inputs on this device.
Formulas
- Profit = Price – Cost
- Gross margin % = Profit / Price x 100
- Markup % = Profit / Cost x 100
- Price from a target margin = Cost / (1 – Margin)
- Price from a target markup = Cost x (1 + Markup)
- Highest cost for a price and margin = Price x (1 – Margin)
Example: a product that costs 40 and sells for 60 makes 20 profit. That is a 33.33% margin but a 50% markup. The margin vs markup table shows this gap for common margins and the price you would need for each one.
Bulk product list
Paste rows of product, cost, price and quantity from Excel or Google Sheets, or import a CSV. The tool works out each margin, flags products below your chosen margin or sold at a loss, fills empty prices from a target margin, and gives a weighted margin for the whole range. Export the results as CSV or PDF.
Limitations
Gross margin only covers the direct cost of each unit. It does not include rent, salaries, marketing or tax, so a healthy gross margin can still mean a loss overall. Enter prices before sales tax or VAT. This is a planning tool, not financial or tax advice; check important pricing decisions with your accountant.
Profit Margin Calculator FAQs
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit as a share of the selling price, while markup is profit as a share of the cost. A product bought for 40 and sold for 60 has a 33.33% margin and a 50% markup. Markup is always the larger number, so mixing them up can lead to prices that are too low.
How do I calculate the selling price for a 30% margin?
Divide the cost by one minus the margin. For a 30% margin on a cost of 40, the price is 40 / 0.70 = 57.14. Choose Find the price for a target margin in the calculator and it does this for you, then shows the matching markup and profit per unit.
What is a good profit margin?
It depends on the industry. Grocery and fuel often run on low single digit margins, while software, cosmetics and services can earn 60% or more. Compare yourself with businesses like yours, and make sure your gross margin covers overheads such as rent, salaries and marketing with room for profit.
Can I calculate margins for many products at once?
Yes. Open the Bulk product list tab and paste product, cost, price and quantity from a spreadsheet or import a CSV file. You get the margin and markup for every row, a weighted margin for the whole list, warnings for low margin items and a CSV or PDF export.
