How the Google Ads copywriter works

A Responsive Search Ad lets you add up to 15 headlines of 30 characters and 4 descriptions of 90 characters. Google tests combinations and shows the best performers. For that to work, your assets need variety.

The method

The tool builds a large pool of headlines in groups: keyword, benefit, call to action, location, brand, offer and trust. It keeps only those within 30 characters, then picks a balanced set of 15. Descriptions combine your benefits and a call to action and must fit 90 characters. You also get four sitelinks (25 and 35 character limits), callouts (25), a structured snippet with a valid header, a keyword insertion example and pin suggestions.

Every asset is an editable field with a live counter that turns red over the limit, and a preview shows how a combination might look.

The tool combines your inputs with tested copywriting frameworks such as AIDA, Problem-Agitate-Solve, Before-After-Bridge and Features-Advantages-Benefits. It adds industry word banks for more than a dozen niches, five tones of voice and call-to-action banks for booking, calling, buying, visiting, learning, enquiring and WhatsApp. It then varies sentence openings and removes near-duplicates, so every option reads differently. Click “Generate more” for a fresh mix.

Optional AI mode

When the site owner switches it on, an extra “AI version” button can write one more variation using Google’s free Gemini tier. Everything else works without it, with no sign-up and no credits.

Limitations

Use only claims you can prove. Superlatives such as “best” usually need third-party verification, offers must match the landing page and some industries, such as health and legal services, face extra rules. Ad strength and performance depend on your account, bids and landing page, which this tool cannot see.

FAQ

Google Ads Copywriter FAQs

How many headlines does a Google responsive search ad need?

You can add up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions, with a minimum of 3 headlines and 2 descriptions. Adding more distinct headlines gives Google more combinations to test and usually improves ad strength. The free tool above is built around this approach, so you can try it in seconds and edit the result.

What are the Google Ads character limits?

Headlines allow 30 characters, descriptions 90, sitelink titles 25 and sitelink descriptions 35 per line, callouts 25 and structured snippet values 25. The display URL paths allow 15 characters each. Always review the final version yourself and make sure it fits your brand before you publish it.

Should I pin headlines in Google Ads?

Pin only when you must, for example a brand or legal line in position 1. Pinning reduces the combinations Google can test and can lower ad strength. Pin a small group of headlines to one slot rather than a single headline.

What is keyword insertion in Google Ads?

Keyword insertion replaces placeholder text with the keyword that triggered your ad, written like {KeyWord:Default Text}. It can raise relevance, but use it only in tightly themed ad groups so the inserted text always reads well. Small, consistent improvements like this add up over time and are easy to test.
