How the grammar and readability checker works
The checker measures readability with two standard formulas. Flesch Reading Ease is 206.835 minus 1.015 times the average sentence length minus 84.6 times the average syllables per word; higher is easier, and 60 or more is plain English. The Flesch-Kincaid grade estimates the US school grade needed to read the text.
The method
It also counts words, sentences and paragraphs and estimates reading time at about 238 words per minute. Then it highlights:
- Sentences over 25 words, and very long ones over 35
- Possible passive voice
- Adverbs ending in -ly, filler words and cliches
- Repeated words such as “the the” and double spaces
- A or an before vowel sounds, their, there and they’re, its and it’s, could of, alot and then or than
- Missing capital letters after a full stop
It is ideal for checking blog posts, emails and web pages before they go live.
Limitations
This is a rule-based checker, not a human editor. It can miss errors that need context and can flag text that is correct, such as intentional repetition. Syllable counts are estimates. Your text stays in your browser and is never uploaded.
Grammar and Readability Checker FAQs
What is a good readability score?
On the Flesch Reading Ease scale, 60 to 70 is plain English that most adults read easily, and many websites aim for 60 or above. A Flesch-Kincaid grade of 8 or lower suits most general audiences. The free tool above is built around this approach, so you can try it in seconds and edit the result.
Is passive voice always wrong?
No. Passive voice is useful when the actor is unknown or unimportant. Too much of it makes writing vague and wordy, so use active voice by default and keep passive sentences where they genuinely read better. Always review the final version yourself and make sure it fits your brand before you publish it.
How does readability affect SEO?
Readability is not a direct ranking factor, but clear writing helps visitors understand and stay on your page, and it makes your content easier to quote in search features. Easy-to-read pages tend to perform better overall. Small, consistent improvements like this add up over time and are easy to test.
Is my text private?
Yes. The checker runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing is sent to a server, so you can safely check private drafts, emails and documents. If you would like expert help, our team can review it and suggest practical improvements.
