Free Keyword Density Checker
Paste your copy or a full HTML page and see which words and phrases you repeat most, how often your target keywords appear and where they are placed.
Keyword Density Checker: Paste your copy or a full HTML page and see which words and phrases you repeat most, how often your target keywords appear and where they are placed. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser. How to use it: 1) paste your page text or the full HTML source; 2) add one or more target keywords, separated by commas; 3) click Analyze and review the tables, placement checks and CSV export. The tool splits your text into words, counts every word and every two and three word phrase, and shows how often each one appears. If you paste HTML, it removes scripts, styles and tags first, then reads your title tag, meta description, headings and image alt text separately so it can check where your target keywords are placed.
How the keyword density checker works
The tool splits your text into words, counts every word and every two and three word phrase, and shows how often each one appears. If you paste HTML, it removes scripts, styles and tags first, then reads your title tag, meta description, headings and image alt text separately so it can check where your target keywords are placed.
Formula
Density is the number of times a phrase appears divided by the total number of words, multiplied by 100. A page with 500 words that uses a phrase 5 times has a density of 1%. Phrases are only counted inside the same sentence, so word pairs never jump across a full stop.
Stop words
Common words such as the, and or of are filtered out by default so the tables show meaningful terms. Turn the filter off to see every word.
There is no ideal density
Google does not use a target keyword percentage. Use the results to spot accidental repetition, missing keywords and thin topic coverage. A natural page mentions its main topic in the title, the H1 and the opening paragraph, then uses related words and synonyms throughout.
Limitations
The tool counts exact word matches, so plurals and synonyms count as different words. It cannot see content that loads with JavaScript after the page opens. Paste the rendered text if your page builds content that way.
Keyword Density Checker FAQs
What is a good keyword density?
There is no perfect number. Google has said for years that it does not use keyword density as a ranking target. Most well written pages end up between about 0.5% and 2% for their main phrase simply by covering the topic naturally. If a phrase is much higher, the copy may read as repetitive to visitors.
Can keyword stuffing hurt my rankings?
Yes. Repeating a keyword unnaturally is against Google spam policies and can make a page rank lower or be ignored. It also hurts conversions because the copy reads poorly. Use this checker to find phrases you overuse, then replace some of them with synonyms, related terms or more specific details.
Does the tool check my HTML headings and title?
Yes. When you paste full HTML, the checker reads the title tag, meta description, H1, H2 to H6 headings and image alt text. For each target keyword it shows whether the phrase appears in each place and in the first 100 words of the visible text.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. All counting happens in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never sent to our server, so you can safely check unpublished drafts and client copy. You can download the full results as a CSV file for your records or to share with your writer.
