How the search intent classifier works

Search intent is the goal behind a query. This tool uses a transparent rule set instead of a black box. Each keyword is checked against lists of modifier words, and every match adds points to an intent.

  • Informational: how, what, why, guide, tips, examples.
  • Commercial: best, top, review, vs, compare, alternatives.
  • Transactional: buy, price, cost, cheap, deal, order, book, hire, quote.
  • Local: near me, open now, directions, ZIP codes and the place names you enter.
  • Navigational: login, official site, contact and the brand terms you enter.

Local signals win when present, because the results page will show a map pack. Brand terms make a keyword navigational unless it also contains buying or comparison words.

Confidence

High means the top intent leads clearly. Medium means it leads by a small margin. Low means a tie or no modifier at all. Short head terms with no modifier are often mixed intent.

Limitations

The tool reads only the words in each keyword. It does not use search volume, difficulty or live results, and it does not invent those numbers. Google decides intent from what people click, so always check the live results page for your most important keywords before planning content.

FAQ

Search Intent Classifier FAQs

What are the main types of search intent?

The common types are informational (learning), navigational (finding a specific site), commercial (comparing options), transactional (ready to buy or book) and local (looking for a nearby business). Many keywords mix two types, which is why this tool also shows a secondary intent when it finds one.

Why does search intent matter for SEO?

Google ranks the type of page that best matches what searchers want. A how-to guide rarely ranks for a buy keyword, and a product page rarely ranks for a what is query. Matching your page type to the intent is often the fastest way to improve rankings for an existing page.

How accurate is rule-based intent classification?

It is a fast first pass. Keywords with clear modifiers such as how to, best, price or near me are usually classified correctly. Short head terms with no modifier are marked low confidence because their intent depends on the results page. Check those manually by searching them in a private window.

Does this tool show search volume or keyword difficulty?

No. Real volume and difficulty data come from paid databases, and we will not show made up numbers. Use this tool to organise your list by intent, then check volumes in Google Keyword Planner or Search Console for the groups that matter most to your business.
