Quick answer

Credit Card Payoff Calculator: Find out how long your card balance takes to clear with minimum or fixed payments, what you need to pay to be debt-free by a date, and whether avalanche or snowball works better for several cards. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser. How to use it: 1) choose one card or several cards and enter the balance, APR and minimum payment details; 2) add a fixed payment or a debt-free month, or set your total monthly budget for several cards; 3) compare the plans, the balance chart and the month-by-month schedule, then save the plan. Each month the card adds interest at the APR divided by 12, then your payment is taken off. The tool repeats this until the balance reaches zero and counts the months, the interest and the total paid.

How the credit card payoff calculator works

Each month the card adds interest at the APR divided by 12, then your payment is taken off. The tool repeats this until the balance reaches zero and counts the months, the interest and the total paid. For one card it compares minimum payments, your fixed payment and the payment needed to be debt-free by a chosen month.

Several cards

Enter each card and your total monthly budget. Every card gets its minimum. The avalanche method sends the rest to the highest APR card first. The snowball method sends it to the smallest balance first. When a card is paid off, its minimum rolls into the extra payment.

Formulas

  • Monthly interest: balance x APR / 12
  • Minimum payment: interest + % of balance or % of balance, at least the floor amount.
  • Payment to clear it in n months: B x i / (1 - (1 + i)^-n), with i = APR / 12.

Example: 5,000 at 22.9% APR needs about 261.62 a month to be paid off in 24 months.

Limitations

The plan assumes no new purchases, fees or rate changes. Many issuers charge interest daily and use their own minimum payment rules, so real figures can differ slightly. Promotional 0% periods are not modelled. This is not financial advice. Check your statement or talk to your bank or a debt adviser.

FAQ

Credit Card Payoff Calculator FAQs

How long will it take to pay off my credit card with minimum payments?

Often many years, because the minimum shrinks as the balance falls. A 5,000 balance at 22.9% APR, paying interest plus 1% with a 25 floor, takes about 19 years and costs over 8,000 in interest. Enter your own card details to see your exact timeline and how much a fixed payment saves.

How much should I pay to be debt-free by a certain date?

Enter the month you want to be debt-free and the calculator uses the loan payment formula B x i / (1 – (1 + i)^-n). For 5,000 at 22.9% APR over 24 months, you need about 261.62 a month. Paying this fixed amount every month, with no new spending, clears the card on time.

Is the avalanche or snowball method better?

Avalanche, paying the highest APR first, always costs the least interest. Snowball, paying the smallest balance first, clears whole cards sooner, which helps many people stay motivated. The calculator runs both with your real cards and budget, so you can see exactly how much more interest snowball costs before you choose.

Why does my balance barely go down?

Most of a small payment goes to interest. At 24% APR, a 5,000 balance adds about 100 of interest each month, so a 125 payment only cuts the balance by 25. Paying a fixed amount well above the interest, and stopping new purchases, makes the balance fall much faster.
