How the engagement rate calculator works

Engagement rate shows how actively people interact with your content compared with your audience size. The calculator supports four methods.

The method

MethodFormula
By followers(likes + comments + shares + saves) / followers x 100
By reach(likes + comments + shares + saves) / reach x 100
By impressions(likes + comments + shares + saves) / impressions x 100
Post averageaverage engagements per post / followers x 100

Example: 300 likes, 50 comments, 20 shares and 30 saves with 10,000 followers is 400 / 10,000 x 100 = 4%. The post average mode accepts one post per line and highlights your best post.

Who it is for

Use it to report results to clients, compare posts and track your own progress month by month.

Limitations

The ranges shown for each platform are general industry rules of thumb, not official figures or guarantees. Engagement varies widely by niche, account size and format, and smaller accounts usually see higher rates. Your own past performance is the best benchmark. The calculator only uses the numbers you enter.

FAQ

Engagement Rate Calculator FAQs

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

As a rough rule of thumb, 1% to 3% by followers is typical and above 3% is strong, but it varies by niche and account size. Compare against your own recent posts and similar accounts rather than one universal number.

Should I calculate engagement by followers or reach?

By followers is the most common public benchmark and easy to compare. By reach shows how engaging a post was for people who actually saw it, which is better for judging content quality. Use both if you have the data.

What counts as engagement?

Usually likes or reactions, comments, shares and saves. Some marketers also include clicks or profile visits. Keep your definition consistent so you can compare results over time. The free tool above is built around this approach, so you can try it in seconds and edit the result.

Why is my engagement rate dropping as I grow?

Larger accounts usually have lower rates because not every new follower sees or interacts with every post. Focus on content that earns saves, shares and comments, and track reach-based engagement too. Always review the final version yourself and make sure it fits your brand before you publish it.
