Tip Calculator and Bill Splitter: Find the right tip in seconds, split the bill evenly between any number of people and round to an easy amount. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser. How to use it: 1) enter the bill amount; 2) tap a tip percentage or type your own; 3) enter how many people are paying; 4) optionally add the tax to tip on the pre-tax amount, and choose a rounding option. The calculator updates as you type. It multiplies the bill by your tip percentage, adds the tip to the bill and divides the total by the number of people.
How the tip calculator works
The calculator updates as you type. It multiplies the bill by your tip percentage, adds the tip to the bill and divides the total by the number of people. A quick table shows the tip at 10, 12, 15, 18, 20 and 25 percent so you can compare.
Formulas
Tip = (bill - tax) x tip % / 100Total = bill + tipPer person = total / people
Tipping on the pre-tax amount
Many people prefer to tip on the food and drinks only, not on the sales tax. Enter the tax shown on your receipt and the tool takes it out before working out the tip. The tax is still included in the total you pay.
Rounding options
- Round the tip up to a whole number.
- Round the total up so the bill is easy to pay in cash.
- Round each share up so nobody pays odd cents. The extra goes to the tip, and the tool shows the effective tip percentage after rounding.
Limitations
The split is even. If people ordered very different amounts, work out each share separately. Tipping customs differ a lot between countries. In the United States 15 to 20 percent is common at restaurants, while in many other countries a service charge is already on the bill or tipping is optional. Check the receipt for a service charge before adding a tip. The tool works offline and stores nothing.
Tip Calculator FAQs
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the United States 15 to 20 percent of the pre-tax bill is common for table service, with 20 percent or more for great service. In the UK and much of Europe around 10 percent is typical when no service charge is included. Always check the receipt first, because some restaurants add a service charge already.
Should I tip on the total before or after tax?
Etiquette guides usually say to tip on the amount before tax, since tax is not part of the service. The difference is small, but this calculator lets you do either. Enter the tax from your receipt to tip on the pre-tax amount, or leave it empty to tip on the full bill.
How do I split a bill with a tip between friends?
Enter the bill, your tip percentage and the number of people. The calculator adds the tip to the bill and divides the total evenly. Choose Round each share up if you want simple amounts. Then tap Share or Copy to send the split to your group chat.
How do I calculate a 15 or 20 percent tip quickly?
For 10 percent, move the decimal point one place left. Double that for 20 percent. For 15 percent, add half of the 10 percent figure to itself. On a 60 bill, 10 percent is 6, 20 percent is 12 and 15 percent is 9. The quick table in the tool shows all common rates at once.
