Local SEO for Service-Area Businesses Without an Office Address: No storefront? Learn how service-area businesses can verify Google Business Profile, hide their address, set service areas and rank locally. Read the guide.
A service-area business without a public office can still rank in local search. Verify a Google Business Profile at the real address you work from, hide that address, set accurate service areas, choose the right primary category, build service and area pages on your website, keep citations consistent, and earn steady reviews from customers across your service area.
- You can verify at a real address and hide it from the public.
- Virtual offices, PO boxes and mailbox services are not eligible addresses.
- Service areas describe where you work; ranking still depends heavily on proximity.
- Genuine area and service pages, reviews and local links extend visibility.
- Keep name and phone consistent everywhere and hide the address on directories too.
Plumbers, cleaners, mobile mechanics, chauffeur and limo operators, photographers and home-visit therapists all serve customers at the customer’s location. Many work from home and do not want their address on Google Maps. The good news is that Google has a clear setup for exactly this kind of business, and the ranking principles are the same as for any local business, with a few important differences.
What is a service-area business (SAB)?
A service-area business is one that visits or delivers to customers instead of serving them at a staffed storefront. Google lets these businesses hide their address and show a service area instead.
Some businesses are hybrids. A clinic that also offers home visits, or a limo company with a garage customers never visit, should think carefully about which model fits. If customers come to your premises during stated hours, show the address. If they never do, hide it.
Can I create a Google Business Profile without an office?
Yes. You still need a real address for verification, usually your home or the place you operate from, but you can choose not to show it publicly. What you cannot do is use an address you have no real presence at.
According to Google Business Profile Help, PO boxes, mailbox services and virtual offices are not eligible. Coworking spaces are only acceptable in limited cases, typically where the business has permanent signage and staff present during business hours. Using a fake or virtual address is one of the most common reasons we see profiles suspended.
How do I set up a profile as a service-area business?
- Create the profile and enter your real business name, exactly as customers see it on your vehicles, invoices and website.
- Choose your primary category carefully. It is one of the strongest relevance signals, for example “Limousine service”, “Plumber” or “House cleaning service”.
- When asked whether you want to add a location customers can visit, choose no, or enter your address and then clear the address field in the Business information settings so it is hidden.
- Add your service areas as cities, postcodes, ZIP codes or regions.
- Complete verification. Google often asks service-area businesses for a video showing your location, equipment, tools or branded vehicles, and proof that you manage the business.
- Fill in hours, services, a description, a website link, phone number and real photos of your team and work.
How should I set my service areas?
List the cities, districts or postcodes you genuinely serve, up to the limit Google allows. Google’s guidance says the overall area should generally not extend more than about two hours’ driving time from where your business is based.
Service areas describe where you work. They do not make you rank everywhere you list. Your ranking is still strongly influenced by where your verified address is and where the searcher is. A business based in Queens that lists all five New York City boroughs and Long Island will usually rank best near Queens and need stronger signals to compete further away.
| Setting | Good practice | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Address | Real address, hidden from the public | Virtual offices, PO boxes, mailbox stores |
| Service areas | Cities, ZIP codes or postcodes you actually serve | Whole states or countries, or areas many hours away |
| Business name | Your real trading name | Adding keywords or city names to the name |
| Categories | One precise primary category, a few relevant secondary ones | Long lists of loosely related categories |
| Phone number | A local number answered by you | Several call-tracking numbers across listings |
How do I rank in cities where I have no address?
Build relevance and prominence for those areas through your website, reviews and local mentions. You cannot fake proximity, but you can become the most relevant and trusted option.
- Create genuine area pages. One page per main city or district you serve, with real local detail: jobs completed there, common requests, travel times, landmarks or airports. Avoid copying one template and swapping the city name.
- Create service pages. A dedicated page for each core service, linked from the relevant area pages.
- Ask for reviews that mention the area naturally. When a customer in Brookline or Cambridge leaves a review, the place often appears in their words without you scripting it.
- Earn local links and mentions. Local business associations, chambers of commerce, event sponsorships, venue partners and local news.
- Post Google updates about real jobs in different parts of your service area, with photos.
In our work with limousine companies serving the South Shore and North Shore of Massachusetts and airports such as Logan, JFK and LAX, well-built airport and town pages combined with steady reviews have been the most reliable way to extend visibility beyond the base location.
Should I put my address on my website and citations?
Be consistent. If your address is hidden on Google, you can leave the street address off your website and show your city and service areas instead. On directories that allow it, hide the address too.
Most major directories, including Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and Facebook, support service-area or hidden-address options. Your business name and phone number should match everywhere. We cover the directories that matter in each country in our guide to business listings and citations.
For structured data, use LocalBusiness schema or a more specific subtype with areaServed listing your cities, and include only the address parts you show publicly. Keep it consistent with what the page says.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a virtual office or coworking desk to get a “real” address. This often ends in suspension, sometimes long after the profile was approved.
- Showing a home address by accident. Check the public profile after any edit, because some changes can make the address visible.
- Creating multiple profiles for different cities without a staffed location in each. This violates Google’s guidelines.
- Keyword stuffing the business name, for example “Best Limo Boston Logan Airport Car Service”. It can trigger suspension and competitors can report it.
- Thin, duplicate city pages that only swap the town name. They rarely rank and can drag the whole site down.
- Listing service areas you cannot actually reach in a reasonable time. It brings poor leads and bad reviews.
What if I move or my profile gets suspended?
If you move, update the hidden address in your profile and expect to re-verify. If your profile is suspended, fix any guideline issues first, then submit a reinstatement request with evidence.
Useful evidence includes a business licence or registration, a utility bill or lease showing the address, photos of branded vehicles or equipment, and insurance documents. In the USA that may be a state business registration or an operating authority. In the UK it may be Companies House records, and in Canada or Australia your provincial or ABN registration. Keep these documents ready before you need them.

Frequently asked questions
Can I have a Google Business Profile without a physical address?
You need a real address where you operate, often your home, to verify the profile, but you can hide it from the public and show service areas instead. PO boxes, mailbox services and virtual offices are not eligible. Google may ask for video verification showing your equipment, vehicles or proof you manage the business.
How many service areas can I add to Google Business Profile?
Google allows up to 20 service areas, which can be cities, postcodes, ZIP codes or regions. The overall area should generally not extend beyond about two hours of driving from your base. Adding more areas does not guarantee rankings there, because proximity to your verified address still matters.
Does hiding my address hurt my local ranking?
Hiding your address does not in itself lower your ranking. Google still knows your verified location and uses it for proximity. What matters is choosing the right category, building relevant website content, earning reviews and keeping citations consistent. Hiding the address is simply the correct setup for a business with no customer-facing premises.
Can I use a virtual office for my Google Business Profile?
No. Google does not allow virtual offices, mailbox services or PO boxes as business addresses unless there is staffed, permanent presence during business hours. Profiles using virtual addresses are often suspended, sometimes months after approval. Use your real operating address and hide it if customers do not visit.
How do I rank in a city where my business is not located?
Create a genuinely useful page for that city on your website, earn reviews from customers there, get mentions from local organisations and post updates about work you completed in the area. You cannot create a fake address there, but strong relevance and prominence can help you appear for searches across your service area.
