How the backend keywords generator works

Amazon’s generic keyword field, also called backend search terms, lets you add words shoppers search for that are not in your title or bullets. The US limit is less than 250 bytes, and Amazon may not index the field when it is over the limit. This tool cleans your list and fits it to that limit. It runs in your browser and works offline.

Cleaning steps

  1. Lowercase every word and drop punctuation, because Amazon does not need commas or other separators.
  2. Remove brand names you enter, ASINs, ISBNs and barcode numbers, which are not allowed.
  3. Remove subjective or temporary claims such as best, amazing, new or sale.
  4. Remove words already in your title and, if you choose, your bullets, since Amazon already indexes them.
  5. Remove repeated words, singular or plural forms of words you already have, and stop words such as the, for and with.
  6. Add the remaining words in your order until the byte limit is reached, and list the words that did not fit.

Counting bytes

Amazon counts bytes, not characters. Plain letters use one byte, while accented letters such as the e in cafe with an accent use two, so café is five bytes. Amazon says spaces and punctuation do not count. The tool shows both the raw byte count and that counted figure, and fits to the raw count by default for safety.

Limitations

The tool only reorganises words you supply. It does not suggest new keywords or show search volumes, because we never estimate numbers. Plural folding uses simple English rules. Some categories use other limits, so change the byte limit if needed. Default rates and limits checked November 2026. Fees and rules change, so confirm in your seller dashboard. Not affiliated with Etsy, Amazon, eBay or Walmart.

FAQ

Amazon Backend Keywords Generator FAQs

What is the byte limit for Amazon backend search terms?

In the Amazon US store the search terms field must be less than 250 bytes. Most letters use one byte, but accented and non Latin characters use two or more. Amazon says spaces and punctuation are not counted. If the field goes over the limit, Amazon may not index it at all, so stay safely under.

Should I repeat title words in backend search terms?

No. Amazon already indexes the words in your title and bullet points, so repeating them in the search terms field wastes bytes. Use the space for synonyms, spelling variants, abbreviations, other languages and use cases that are not in your visible copy. Each word only needs to appear once in the field.

Can I put competitor brand names in backend keywords?

No. Amazon asks sellers not to include brand names, their own or other brands, in search terms, and doing so can lead to listing problems. Enter any brand names in the brands box and the generator removes them, including multi word brands, and tells you exactly what it took out.

Do I need commas between Amazon backend keywords?

No. Separate words with single spaces. Commas, semicolons and other punctuation are not needed because Amazon combines your words into phrases on its own. Amazon also says spaces and punctuation do not count toward the byte limit, but leaving them out keeps the field clean and easy to edit later.
