How the digital marketing budget planner works

Many businesses set their marketing budget as a share of revenue. The planner multiplies your annual revenue, or target revenue if you are new, by the percentage you choose to get an annual and monthly budget.

Common planning ranges

As a rule of thumb, established businesses often plan around 5 to 10 percent of revenue, growing businesses around 7 to 15 percent, and new businesses or launches often 10 to 20 percent. These are planning habits, not rules. The right figure depends on your margins, competition and goals.

Channel split

The tool suggests a starting split across seven lines: SEO, Google Ads, Meta Ads, content, email, tools and design. The split changes with your goal. Lead generation leans on search, online sales lean on shopping ads, Meta and email, and awareness leans on social and content. Your business stage adjusts it a little more.

  • Annual budget = revenue x share
  • Monthly budget = annual budget / 12
  • Channel budget = monthly budget x channel %

Make it yours

Every percentage is editable. Amounts update straight away and a warning appears if the total is not 100 percent. Download the plan as a CSV for your spreadsheet.

Limitations

The default split is a starting point, not advice for your exact market. Ad lines are media spend, so add management fees if someone runs your campaigns. Measure cost per lead or sale for each channel and move budget towards what works.

FAQ

Digital Marketing Budget Planner FAQs

How much should a business spend on digital marketing?

A common rule of thumb is 5 to 10 percent of revenue for established businesses and more, often 10 to 20 percent, for new or fast growing ones. Your margins, competition and goals matter more than any average, so test and adjust.

How do I split a marketing budget across channels?

Start with the channels closest to the sale, such as search ads and your Google profile for local businesses, or shopping ads and email for online stores. Keep some budget for content and SEO, which build over time, and a small amount for testing.

Should a new business spend more on marketing?

Usually yes, as a share of revenue, because it has to build awareness from zero. Many new businesses base the budget on target revenue rather than current revenue, then reduce the share as word of mouth and SEO grow. Track results closely.

Does the marketing budget include agency fees?

It can. The ad lines in this planner are media spend paid to Google or Meta. If an agency or freelancer manages your marketing, include their fees in your plan, either as a separate line or within the SEO, content and design budgets.
