Cost Per Lead Calculator: Compare up to six channels side by side by cost per lead, cost per customer and lead quality, and find your most efficient source. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser. How to use it: 1) pick your currency; 2) enter spend, leads and customers for each channel; 3) click Compare channels; 4) check the best channel and download the CSV. Cost per lead, or CPL, shows how much you pay for each enquiry. On its own it can mislead, because cheap leads that never buy are expensive in the end.
How the cost per lead calculator works
Cost per lead, or CPL, shows how much you pay for each enquiry. On its own it can mislead, because cheap leads that never buy are expensive in the end. That is why the calculator also asks how many leads became customers.
Formulas
Cost per lead = spend / leadsCost per customer = spend / customersLead to customer rate = customers / leads x 100
Finding the best channel
If you enter customer numbers, the tool picks the channel with the lowest cost per customer as best. If not, it uses cost per lead. When the cheapest lead source differs from the cheapest customer source, it tells you, because that usually means lead quality differs between channels.
Example
| Channel | Spend | Leads | Customers | CPL | Cost per customer |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Ads | 1,500 | 60 | 9 | 25.00 | 166.67 |
| Facebook Ads | 1,000 | 80 | 6 | 12.50 | 166.67 |
| SEO | 800 | 25 | 5 | 32.00 | 160.00 |
Facebook has the cheapest leads, but SEO wins on cost per customer.
Limitations
Results are only as good as your tracking. Make sure leads are counted the same way for each channel and over the same period. SEO and referral costs are often spread over months, so their CPL can look high early and low later.
Cost Per Lead Calculator FAQs
How do you calculate cost per lead?
Divide your marketing spend by the number of leads it produced. For example, 1,500 spent for 60 leads is a cost per lead of 25. Use the same period and count leads the same way across channels. Include all costs for a channel.
What is a good cost per lead?
A good CPL is one that still gives a profitable cost per customer. Work out how many leads you need to win one customer and what a customer is worth, then set your CPL limit from that. Lead costs vary widely by industry and country.
What is the difference between cost per lead and cost per acquisition?
Cost per lead measures the cost of an enquiry. Cost per acquisition measures the cost of a paying customer. A channel with cheap leads can have an expensive CPA if few of those leads buy. Track both numbers so you judge channels by real customers, not just enquiries.
How can I lower my cost per lead?
Improve your landing page conversion rate, tighten targeting, add negative keywords, test stronger offers and follow up faster. Often the quickest win is converting more of the traffic you already pay for. Also check lead quality, because the cheapest leads do not always become customers.
