How to use it: 1) choose what to solve for; 2) enter the other two values; 3) optionally add revenue for eCPM or a CTR for effective CPC; 4) click Calculate and review the what-if table. CPM means cost per mille, or cost per 1,000 impressions. It is the standard price unit for display, video and social ads.
How the CPM calculator works
CPM means cost per mille, or cost per 1,000 impressions. It is the standard price unit for display, video and social ads. The calculator solves for CPM, total cost or impressions when you enter the other two.
Formulas
CPM = total cost / impressions x 1,000Total cost = impressions / 1,000 x CPMImpressions = total cost / CPM x 1,000eCPM = revenue / impressions x 1,000Effective CPC = CPM / (1,000 x CTR)
eCPM
Effective CPM is the same idea seen from the publisher side: how much 1,000 impressions earned. Publishers use it to compare ad networks and placements. Advertisers also use it to compare campaigns bought on different models, such as CPC and CPM, on one scale.
From CPM to cost per click
If you add a click-through rate, the tool shows the effective cost per click. A low CPM with a very low CTR can produce expensive clicks, so it is worth checking both.
Limitations
The results are maths on your inputs, not market prices. CPM changes with audience size, targeting, placement, country and season, and is usually higher in the busy shopping months. Treat CPM as a cost of attention and judge campaigns by the results they bring.
CPM Calculator FAQs
What does CPM mean in advertising?
CPM stands for cost per mille, which is Latin for thousand. It is the price you pay for 1,000 ad impressions. If a campaign costs 500 and delivers 100,000 impressions, the CPM is 5.00. It is the main pricing unit for display, video and most social media ads, including Meta and YouTube campaigns.
How do I calculate CPM?
Divide the total cost by the number of impressions, then multiply by 1,000. For example, 500 divided by 100,000 is 0.005, and multiplied by 1,000 gives a CPM of 5.00. The calculator can also work backwards to find total cost or impressions when you know the CPM and one other value.
What is the difference between CPM and eCPM?
CPM is what an advertiser pays per 1,000 impressions. eCPM is what 1,000 impressions earned or effectively cost, whatever the pricing model. Publishers use eCPM to compare revenue across networks, and advertisers use it to compare CPC and CPM buys.
Is a low CPM always better?
No. A low CPM often means a broad or low quality audience. If few people click or convert, the real cost per result can be high. Compare CPM together with click-through rate and cost per result before deciding which campaign is better.
